I have always wanted to be a writer. When I dreamed about my future in my early 20s, I wondered “could it be possible that I could write, like, for real?” And I did write.  I’ve written 10 journal articles, a dozen or so white papers, hundreds of blogs and thousands of emails.  But I haven’t ever been published for realz…. UNTIL TODAY!!!!!!!

This was an act of true bravery for me. It was very hard to put myself out there for a dream I really, really cared about.  Trust me when I say this:  If I can put it out there… SO CAN YOU!

It's time to go after your scariest dream

Seen at Quartz!!!

“I work with a lot of people who are trying to change their lives for the better in any number of ways. When people describe a situation where they want to meet new people or eat healthier or pursue a new career but they never, ever do it, my first thought is that they need a change in mindset. Remember, we can change the way we visualize and attack our goals—there’s a triathlete of some kind lurking in all of us.”

How did this miracle occur?

  1. As I mentioned a few posts ago, I have been partnering with the Brooklyn Brainery to offer workshops on improvement science and user centered design applied to personal improvement. The editor at Quartz found me there. She wrote to me and asked if I would be interested in writing a “piece” for them. (That’s what we call it)
  2. I did NOT say no. I almost did! “I’m not ready. I need a new theme. My about page is terrible. I need to be a better writer.” Fortunately I am my own first client, and so I coached myself into it. “You’ll get better through doing! The editor will help you!” And I have an amazing support system who said “Of course you will.” So I did!
  3. I actually submitted it. I wrote 4 versions. “Maybe I’ll just wait.” But I didn’t wait. Instead, I said to myself, “Send the crappy version. She’ll tell you if it isn’t good enough.” And do you know what?? It wasn’t crappy!! She said: “I think it’s great; I love the way you weave personal anecdotes and research seamlessly into the piece. I think a lot of people will love it too.”  Whaaaaaat?!?!?

So, my advice? Find a partner who lets you try out your ideas, do your best work, and then take the opportunities that come your way. They WILL come.

Now it’s your turn- what’s one thing can you do TODAY to get you closer to your scariest dream?  Tell me on Facebook or in the comments below!
